New Year Blues

New Year Blues

A Poem by Brandon Houser

It must be hard

Standing on a rock of pride

That sinks in the dirt every time

The world doesn’t owe you

A blessed thing

It can’t spare you a dime

Yet you cry woe is me

To everyone you can blame

And push your problems

On everyone else

Cause no one taught you any shame

So get back on the slide

I’ll be waiting for you to fall

It’s the same thing every December

Fighting with the shadows on the wall

You can’t cry give give give

When you never paid your dues

Until you learn for yourself

My friend

We’ll sing the new year blues

Many people like you

Have come and gone

You are no special case

There is no sense

In running

There never was a race

Yet somehow you think you’re holy

Somehow you think you’re blessed

Locked in your grip

A reflection of fate

Is where your denial rests

So celebrate your battle won

Even if you’ve lost the way

Empty every room you want

You can’t keep the ghosts away

You’ll always trip on mercy

If you never tie your shoes

Until you learn for yourself

My friend

We’ll sing the new year blues

Here’s to another year

Of covering up

The truth with lies

Of hiding behind

An image in broken glass

Because you have no alibi

A friend could get you help

If you’d admit

To trouble now

But it would only stop the cycle

And you don’t want that anyhow

So go ahead and linger

We have another decade’s threat

If the world catches up to you

You’ll pity each other yet

You’ll always walk in the dark

If you always blow the fuse

Until you learn for yourself

My friend

We’ll sing the new year blues

A sharp, unflinching piece. The poem looks straight at denial and self‑made cycles, carried by a strong refrain that lands with weight.

About
Not sure what to add here. I have been writing poems since I was 16. Saved much of it, lost some of it. I'm 51 now. Lately I have felt a need to get my voice out there. I guess like a lot of .. more..
