Right With Myself

Right With Myself

A Poem by Brandon Houser

I don't want to pretend
I just want to defend
Everyone whose been
Down and out
I don't want to fight
I want all to be right
And never have to
Struggle with doubt
I want to reach for the stars
And scream from afar
That life is much better
Not worse
But first
I have to be right with myself

I want to break from my chains
I want to run in the rain
And do what was meant
From the start
I want to give all my love
I want to praise the Lord above
And show what I can do
With my heart
I want to do it all
And I don't want to fall
Or wait for my feelings
To burst
But first
I have to be right with myself

I want to say yes I can
I want to hold someone's hand
And let someone
Hold on to mine
I want to say in the end
I was a good friend
And I did my best
To be kind
I want to have a happy home
I don't want to die alone
I want to stand up and say
I'm not cursed
But first
I have to be right with myself

This feels like a quiet reaching toward wholeness. The repeated "right with myself" lands like a gentle truth the heart keeps circling back to. The wants are tender, human, hopeful... and the honesty gives them weight.

About
Not sure what to add here. I have been writing poems since I was 16. Saved much of it, lost some of it. I'm 51 now. Lately I have felt a need to get my voice out there. I guess like a lot of .. more..
