The Greatest Betrayer

The Greatest Betrayer

A Poem by Brandon Houser

Half of our lives
Is a search for the truth
While the next words
We speak are a lie
Most of the day
We pretend to be tough
But most of the night
All alone we will cry
Most times we refuse
The help of a friend
And grow bitter
When they turn their back
But we know inside
That the greatest betrayer
Of day and of night
Of weakness and strength
Of kindness and longing
Of truth and of lies
Is what we are going to find

In the mirror we want to see Jesus
But you know we see Judas
Who among us can say
We've betrayed with a kiss
Deep down we may strive to be Abel
But we die with the mark of Cain
Resting in a tomb
We created with a misguided wish
We want to help all
Just like John The Baptist
But like Herod
We take off their heads
Because we know inside
That the greatest betrayer
Of brothers and friends
Of saints and redeemers
Of middles and ends
Of fathers and dreamers
Sleeps on our side of the bed

We all want to change
The world for the better
But if the world asks us to change
We cry don't tread on me
We all love our cars and our buses
But we scream for the oil man's head
When the oil hits the sea
We cry for the death
Of a four legged creature
But when our neighbors are killed
It's like we don't care
And we know inside
That the greatest betrayer
Of man and his beasts
Of worlds and creators
Of highways and seas
Of freedom and neighbors
Is ourselves and we're all too aware.

About
Not sure what to add here. I have been writing poems since I was 16. Saved much of it, lost some of it. I'm 51 now. Lately I have felt a need to get my voice out there. I guess like a lot of .. more..
