Backwards Is Forward/Forward Is Backwards

Backwards Is Forward/Forward Is Backwards

A Poem by Brandon Houser

Should I
Close my eyes to make you see
Should I
Push myself away to draw you near
Should I
Go to sleep to wake you up
Should I
Stand still to shake you of fears
I'll keep moving backwards
Just to move you forward
If it helps you here

Should I
Be quiet to get you to hear
Should I
Go in the dark to bring you to light
Should I
Get sick to get you well
Should I
Ask for peace to get you to fight
I'll keep moving backwards
Just to move you forward
If that's alright

Should I
Lie to show you the truth
Should I
Show you honesty to make you bluff
Should I
Go crazy to keep you sane
Should I
Grow weak to make you tough
I'll keep moving backwards
Just to move you forward
If that's enough

There’s a quiet ache running under this one... every stanza built on the same impossible math of love, where giving more of yourself becomes the only way to keep someone else standing.
The reversals work beautifully: each "Should I…" lands like a small surrender, and the refrain turns sacrifice into a kind of devotion.
It reads like someone willing to bend gravity if it means the other person finds their footing. Gentle, weary, and full of heart.

About
Not sure what to add here. I have been writing poems since I was 16. Saved much of it, lost some of it. I'm 51 now. Lately I have felt a need to get my voice out there. I guess like a lot of .. more..
