Today

Today

A Poem by Brandon Houser

I crawled out of my grave today
To learn a new battle cry
You can't be six feet under
And be eight miles high
What's a soul to do
What's a fool to say
So for the loving departed
I crawled out of my grave today

I jumped off the ride today
So I could learn to slow down
You can only go so fast
Before you trip and drown
You can keep on running
Or just learn how to stay
So for the love of speed
I jumped off the ride today

I leaned into the sun today
Too long in the dark
Playing with the lights out
Is no way to make a mark
If you play in the shadows
There's a price to pay
So for the sake of the night
I leaned into the sun today

I crawled out of my grave today
Just to find a new theme
For the saints in the sun
And sinners riding in dreams
That's all I can do
This is all I can say
So for what it's worth
I crawled out of my grave today

I think of Night of the Living Dead...soon we might all be like them, as the world is digging its own grave..."And when we die, and when we are gone, they'll be one child born in this world to carry on, although that child might take one look and jump back into the womb!"

You've created a poem that turns into an emotional inspiration that leads to a lesson on how to create words unique!

Slipping from the shadows opens the eyes, the mind and more - is a fine guide into life at any and all it can give if given the chance

A fine accomplished poem on so many accounts. Great metaphors. Loved the refrain. It works so well. Good to read you.

You are welcome. So pleased it was a smile and not a scowl Brandon :)
This is a reflective and deep poem here....:)

I liked the refrain - I crawled out of my grave today.....this is a great metaphor on many levels...

The way you play with opposites is also effective, light and dark, fast and slow...

Thanks for sharing this thought-provoking write....

Not sure what to add here. I have been writing poems since I was 16. Saved much of it, lost some of it. I'm 51 now. Lately I have felt a need to get my voice out there. I guess like a lot of .. more..
