The Lantern

The Lantern

A Poem by Brandon Houser

I held the lantern
To the world
I couldn't see the light
From the dark
Like a searcher in the wild
Looking for the flame
That has the match
But can't find a spark

I held the lantern
To the threshold
You can only see
Distant in the night
I saw falling stars that drift
For stones that gather moss
Feeding words to angels
Wounded in their flight

I held the lantern
To your soul
Hoping to see
Mirrors into mine
I saw mercy go untamed
In velocity unknown
Lost in corners
No heart can ever find

I held the lantern
To myself
In the end
Hoping I can see
A place to live in peace
With the sinners and the saints
Who left their mark
Lingering deep inside of me

Such a fine poem. Laid in the soft, searching shadow in one's life. Wanting to 'get it right', to find a path where life will be giving yet offer the liberty to find a way that suits and makes as contentedly happy as can.

' I held the lantern
To your soul
Hoping to see
Mirrors into mine
I saw mercy go untamed
In velocity unknown
Lost in corners
No heart can ever find

I held the lantern
To myself
In the end
Hoping I can see
A place to live in peace
With the sinners and the saints
Who left their mark
Lingering deep inside of me'

Light is both a teacher and guide, we all need it during our lives. Without it, we're lost - without hope, without spirit. Your poetry really does emotionally share

A very hopeful piece, though with some moments of feeling lost on your path to peace…… I like the repetition of “ I held the lantern” at the beginning of each stanza…moments of deep soul searching… …..well done Brandon

Hold that light, we all need it in the dark world we find ourselves in. The repetition works well. We all have to find our own peace to navigate our path through life. A fine composition Brandon.

the repeated first line had the desired effect in my humble opinion and served to throw light on the rest of each stanza .. very much enjoyed Brandon .. Neville

Not sure what to add here. I have been writing poems since I was 16. Saved much of it, lost some of it. I'm 51 now. Lately I have felt a need to get my voice out there. I guess like a lot of .. more..
