CryptidsA Story by Elli🦝INformational story on crytpidsSightings of animals who don’t quite look or act how they should have been showing up all over the country since 1673. The first cryptid was discovered by French tourists, who claimed to see an abnormal bird. Since that was brought into light and research had begun, a lot more sightings have shown up all over. The question was: could this all be paranoia, people playing into it, or genuine sightings and real reports? So what are cryptids? Cryptids are creatures whose existence is based on sightings. Their appearances usually match up in stories, as well as behaviors, almost as if a new animal. Cryptozoology, if you haven’t figured it out, is the study of these creatures. Now, I know the thought of cryptids is hard to believe. I mean come on, an abominable snowman? Well, most of these are more so folklore. The abominable snowman is actually Himalayan folklore. Most of the more common cryptids, such as skinwalkers, wendigos, deer women, etc. are derived from Native American folklore. An example of a cryptid would be Bigfoot, a name we always hear. Photos of this one have been all over the internet but is it real? Bigfoot is a Native American legend. It’s an ape-like, large, hairy beast who has been described to be almost human-like. Imagine Chewbacca from Star wars but more human-like. Not the best example, I know. Bigfoot has become a really famous cryptid, and even I believe he has to be out there somewhere. The Washington State Military actually has an article on it. Bigfoot is also called Sasquatch, it’s just not as commonly used. Sasquatch actually comes from a Salish word, se’sxac, which means “Wild Men”. Why should you care about cryptids? It isn’t like they’re messing with nature or our animals. Well to assume that would be wrong. Maybe they aren’t messing with nature, at least not that we know of, but many believe these creatures do cause harm, whether it’s to us or animals. Some of these cryptids do end up getting discovered or proven false. For example, La Llarona, famous in Spanish folklore. Though she is now considered a myth, she was once a cryptid. Many believed she actually existed, and would come for you if you step foot outside at night. Well, now that she’s proven to be nonexistent, she’s become a story you tell your kids so they’ll come home by curfew. A platypus was a cryptid before it was discovered as a new species. They were found in Australia. After their first discovery in 1798 by European settlers, they were considered cryptids, as they were never seen before and kind of unbelievable. Platypus, for those who don’t know, are mammals. They have a duck-like beak, duck-like feet, and a beaver body with a furry tail. They’re also poisonous! Slenderman and many other creepypastas were proven to be false after being considered a cryptid. Many people believe in Slenderman, some going as far as trying to sacrifice their friends to him. I’m not here to persuade you into believing cryptids are real, nor am I here to diss you for believing any of them are real. Yes, some are really believable, while others aren’t. Whether you believe or not is up to you. © 2025 Elli🦝Author's Note
