Go Ask Alice

Go Ask Alice

A Poem by love, lorey

Chasing the rabbit, he said with a laugh,
It isn't quite the fairy-tale.
I shrugged, and grinned and
swallowed it whole.
Greedy, hungry youth.

I cartwheeled through the tumblers
of every locked thought,
twisting kaleidoscope skies.
Tasting music and dancing
in the aftermath of euphoria.
Wicked, wonder-filled youth.

You taste of heaven! I screamed
at the world.
Before it turned to hell.

Chaotic bits of history
and hate,
slapped around my innocence and dreams.
I told myself,
The tiger's might is empty!
But I felt the drug peel my skin
away from my soul
and I knew that I lied.

Desperate, ragged youth.

This is one of the nicest things I've read on here -- I've read some awfully simpering stuff. This stands out a million times - the imagery, the broadening parallel between beautiful and clichéd, so often abused in the most mediocre of poet's work, has been achieved so wonderfully here. I wish I could compliment you as eloquently as you write -- that last line, particularly, hit home. Wow, though. It must be quite the achievement to be as wonderfully wondrous as your gift. Needless to say, I loved it.

Thank you, Julie! I very much appreciate you words :)
I really loved the imagery in this piece and also the title! There's a book called "Go Ask Alice" that I've never read and doesn't have anything to do with this poem, but just wanted to throw it in there. I was reminded of Alice in Wonderland from the first sentence, but got a completely different story that didn't include her journey. I was close to writing poem about Alice in Wonderland, but didn't get very far. I love the deeper message in this poem as it says that the world really isn't what we expect it to be. I loved this piece...

This poem quite cleverly documents a seemingly borderline insanity but that's a good thing for writers such as you and I. I loved the imagery and symbolism carried throughout the entire poem. I especially was grateful for the joy that the line "twisting kaleidoscope skies" composed with the gentle window of my soul.
