Sleeping away

Sleeping away

A Poem by M. Shepherd

It was the equinox, night no longer stealing

away

the covers from a shivering day.

I did not wake from the time the light slipped

away

to the time it slunk back in, a professional.

When I closed them my eyes were shot liver spots, when reopened, rinsed eggs

My body wakes me when empty

I fill it with nuts and grains

Then return to my grave.

Only in partial jest

he tells me

my hair smells of a birds nest

And my eyes are caught by the pattern of a dish underneath the couch. Mine?

It does not require distance in miles to sleep away.

Superb!

I really enjoyed reading this piece. There is something in your writing style that really speaks to me.
"I did not wake from the time the light slipped away
to the time it slunk back in, a professional."
This sentence is the one that really got me into the poem as a whole. I also really loved the ending of it. A single word can do so much.
