Three At LunchA Poem by MarkComposed while on a break, during one of my several stays at Southeast Louisiana Hospital. I often try to see the weighty in the mundane...Perhaps I try too hard, sometimes?
THREE AT LUNCH
I. Tree's fragility Versus Earth's staunch fortitude Is as Man to God II. It is but a bench For picnics; How do I know? Are they not all so? III. Dandelion bloom, Only in bending, breaks not: Spake not thus the Christ? (notes: I have received several comments on this piece regarding the elusiveness of its meaning. While it is the very nature of Haiku to stimulate thought, rather than finally answer anything, I offer these explanations in deference to the general mein.) I. A tree, viewing itself, might think itself a mighty thing, but compared to the Earth as a whole, is trivial; keep yourself in perspective; II. Something of a throwaway, admittedly; I merely address the problem we humans have of making snap judgements based on external appearances, and III. Sitting in a 20-knot breeze, I observe the tall grass, leaning over and springing back, while the rotting trunks of three fallen trees lay behind, because they refused to yield!
