Re Creation’s Song

by Marshal Gebbie

Were that I were bounteous,
Were that I were strong,
Were that I had substance
I would sing for freedom’s song.

I would sing, as does a blackbird
With a resonance so clear
As to wake the deaf of humankind
And hound their jaded ear.

To awake their sense of sameness
To jolt their sense of fair,
To arouse the warmth of brotherhood,
To cleanse our racist air.

For the blacks, the whites, the brindle
Are homogenously one,
You break the skin, the blood is red
We’re born beneath one sun.

Each man loves his mother’s warmth
Each man holds his wife,
Each man feeds his children
And cherishes their life.

So where’s the racial difference?
What makes this problem start ?
What prompts the cold Kalashnikov
To kill that other heart?

What prompts back alley beatings
Of infidels who stray ?
What price religious difference
By men who say they pray?

Who is this God who fosters war ?
How can he profess to be
A champion of sanity
To unleash this killing spree ?

Were that I were bounteous,
Were that I were strong,
Were that I had wisdom
I would sing for freedom’s song.

I would sing for racial harmony,
I would sing for such a day,
That men could laugh together
Be they black or white or grey.

One gets the feeling, having read this, that if there IS a God then perhaps he is NOT bounteous, strong or wise... And we as human beings are therefore unlikely to be bounteous, strong and wise either. A thought to ponder.
This is a magnificent bit of work. I know that 'songs for freedom' are a little naive and sweet on the whole, but this is so rousing, lingually insightful, and lyrically perfected that it transcends anything of its genre that has previously passed before my eyes.

I was not at all saddened by this verse, quite the contrary, though I was somewhat saddened by the Featured Review. Maybe, just maybe, God is good, and we're bad anyway, despite His best efforts? Just sayin'....
But I hear in your words a wish that mankind not only COULD be better, but that they WOULD!! "What prompts the cold Kalashnikov", indeed? Money and power, and the motivator behind them is Fear. None of those three qualities abides long where Mankind embraces the Father's values, rather than the Enemy's.
A most challenging and thought-provoking work, Marshall...Do you perhaps know my other Kiwi friend on this site, Lourisa?

A dream to be hoped for... but the reality is holding power and THAT is done by blaming differences and making scapegoats. Tell lies and hatred loud and long enough and even if people don't believe they cease disagreeing... you get tired.

You have heart.

Take care,
Chris

Amazing and powerful words. I agree with your desire and statements in this poem. Your poem remind me of the Native Americans belief in the Circle of life. Need all races to seek peace so all the children can have a good life. Thank you for your powerful and beautiful words of hope. I wish we could get the leaders of this world to seek peace/reason before war. A outstanding poem.
