I Took My Friend to My Dental Appointment… He Ended Up Learning About CDCP Instead

A Story by mccallumdental

I live in Langford, and last week, I had a dental appointment with my regular dentist at McCallum Dental for a routine treatment that required local anaesthesia. Now, anyone who has had dental anaesthesia knows this: driving home afterward is a bad idea.

Half your face feels like it belongs to someone else, funny, mixed-up version of what you’re trying to say . So, instead of risking I decided to bring a friend along. At first, he jokingly pretended to faint at the mere mention of a dental appointment, as if I had invited him to witness something truly dreadful. But within seconds, curiosity took over. The thought of getting the chance to witness my so-called “dental adventure” from the front row suddenly seemed to amuse him far more than it should have.

The treatment went smoothly, though by the end, I was speaking like a slightly malfunctioning robot. On the way back, I had a sudden craving for something cold and soothing. Ice cream, of course. My friend, true to form, wanted a coffee instead. So we stopped at a small cafe… me delicately navigating ice cream without drooling, him twirling his coffee like a connoisseur judging a fine vintage.

As we sat there, his curiosity took over. He asked everything: “What exactly did the dentist do? Was it painful? How long will the numbness last?” And then came the inevitable question:

“This must have cost a fortune, right?”

I laughed, trying to speak clearly despite the anaesthesia, and said,
“No, I’m covered under CDCP.”

He stared at me like I had just spoken another language.
“CDCP… what’s that?”

For a moment, I thought he was joking. He wasn’t. He’s Canadian, living here for years, and somehow had no idea about the Canadian Dental Care Plan. Honestly, that shocked me more than any dental drill ever could.

So there we were …me with half a working mouth and ice cream smeared across my face, him clutching his coffee with wide eyes. And I ended up giving a lesson on CDCP. The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a government-supported program designed to make dental care more affordable for eligible residents. It covers a wide range of treatments, including routine checkups, cleanings, fillings, root canals, extractions, and sometimes even more specialized procedures, depending on the plan. CDCP helps reduce out-of-pocket costs by covering either a portion or the full cost of these treatments, which encourages people to get regular dental care instead of delaying it due to expense. To be eligible, you usually need to be a Canadian resident and meet certain age, income, or program-specific criteria.

His reactions were priceless: “Seriously? This exists? And nobody told me?”

The funniest part? He had been postponing his own dental appointment for months, thinking it would cost a fortune. By the time we finished our coffee and ice cream, he had already pulled out his phone to check his eligibility. The next day, he told me he had booked an appointment.

That little outing made me realize something important: the biggest reason people avoid dentists isn’t always fear…it’s assumptions about cost. Even Canadians sometimes don’t know about CDCP. I went in for a routine dental procedure and came back having accidentally educated a friend about a benefit he had been missing all along.

All thanks to anaesthesia, ice cream, and his relentless curiosity.

If you’re in Canada and think dental care is always expensive, check if CDCP has your back. And bring a friend to your appointment…for moral support, traffic safety, or just to enjoy your ice cream without judgment.
