I'm Never Not Thinking of You

I thought of you tonight as I stood under a streetlamp,
turning up the collar of my peacoat to the crisp wind
that carries the sweetish scent of hickory with it.
The amber light bounces off the diamond set in my ring �"
the one that I twirl around my finger and pretend was a gift from you;
a promise of what’s to come �" and the asphalt under my flats,
glittering like crushed rhinestones. There’s a lone star
barely visible in the sky; it’s obscured by a blanket of fog.
I find myself wondering if you dream of me half as much
as I dream of you. Do you throw thoughts of how to reach me
around in your mind until it leaves you battered black and blue?
