Swing Close My Caravan

Swing Close My Caravan

A Poem by Michael Sun Bear
"

A very Sufi poem

"

I have fallen from my caravan

The drums no longer beat

My heart

No one holds precious

The holy space between

My breaths

I know not

If my compass still points

Toward the One

I should be in Circle

With brothers with sisters

Warming at the fire

That is She

I should drink and be drunken

In her Tavern

Alone I stagger

In the footsteps of my Guide

Long lost from sight

From heart

For I have fallen from my caravan

A thousand sleepless nights

I weep

I pray your name

I hear it in the wind

I hear it in the surf

Your name that holds

The Universe

I walk the storm strewn shores

Crying out

Come near!

I took steps toward you

Fulfill your promise

Run to me!

Restore my memory

Of my homeland lost

Let me know again

The Secret never hidden

Whether turn of wheel

Or step of camel

Swing close

Let me hear the drums

Hear you laugh

Hear you sing

Hear the solemn gay chant

Toward the One

For I have fallen from my caravan

This is very much a Sufi romance poem. I recognised that immediately. And it is extraordinarily well done. Full of wisdom and fine wordage.

The world is not always kind to those who, like you - struggle to find the right path to content and inner joy, the Self shining out as it was meant to. Reasons, excuses and thought tip-turn meanings for good reason, that to inhale then pause to make sure whether or not one man's path is another man's hell.

The caravan IS permitted to lose direction. Why can't it misread its supposed destiny after a mere second's view. Maybe its disappearance was/is - secretly, the right way. Something missed can stay as a reminder of caution and/or patience for what was intended to be to be treasure rather little or nothing. Yes, not wholly discovered - but neither is it forgotten. The search continues. Perhaps.
