Tribe of Love

Tribe of Love

A Poem by Michael Sun Bear

Through each decade
Desert-bound
Thus have I lived; I am Bedu of
The tribe of Love
Living, moving as the wind
Across these lands
These shifting sands
Vast and arid of those waters

Ishq Allah

A younger man
I once led mighty caravans
Expeditions of devotion
Searching for you
I climbed each drifting dune
For you
Through storms of sand or
Sun-blind, I endured
The endless quest for you
My polestar your face unseen
The crescent moon
My almost empty heart
With glances over shoulder
I fixed my route direct away
Each face I once thought yours

I did thus navigate the
Dark nights of the Soul

Mabud Allah

Back and forth
Across the sands
From bleeding lips
Dry of Love,
I whispered sweet verse
Writ for you
Each camel bell sang out
A song of seeking, yearning
Wanting you

Each word of evening prayer
Each dream in the night
Watered in a rain of stars
These I offered up to you
These I held out, all for you

Every camel’s step a hope
Of drawing ever nearer you
Every drawn breath held
In hope to hold back time for you
Every heartbeat drummed for you
Every love song hummed for you
Once upon that time
So long, long ago

Every step long since erased
In the endless trickling of Love’s sands
Forgotten nearly, no not ever
The moon glow of your silken skin
The arched flash of your eyes so black
All the mystery of your magic
Maiden you I wished were mine

It was all for you
Only you
I was all for you
Only you

Now here I am an old man
Alone, for the Bedu of Love
Moved along one dawn
Herding like goats their days, their lives
Herding hope to pastures high
Made green by God
With fallen tears of Love

I am keeper now
Of Love’s small well
In this ancient oasis, my heart
Here’s where I await you
Where I offer sweet quench of thirst
To the rare pilgrim passing
Seeking Love

Neither sun nor moon
Reflected, in each full bucket drawn
I see only you
The smile of your eyes
Your fall of raven hair
The slight lift of lip in smile

I am keeper now
Of Love’s small well
This I keep in hope of you
God keeps my chalice
Filled for you
This ladle I shall offer you
So you may
Drink straight from my heart

You are my polestar unseen

Ishq Allah, Mabud Allah

What vessels we are of is what we truly offer to those around us and the world in general. Beautiful 🕊️🙏🏻

About
Once upon a time, a crazy, talented poet from across the Salish Sea told me of an intense dream she experienced in which she was given a strange title for a poem, but nothing more. She felt it import.. more..
