like standing stones
of no hope,

young faces,
blank
and medieval-daft,

strong hands,
dangling
like pecked convicts,

bright eyes,
grown dim
like flickering tallow,

proud heads,
bowed
beneath baron’s mace,

feral minds,
lying waste
like idling fallow.
