Shadows

Shadows

A Poem by michaela

Some people don’t think that an edge of the world exists, but I know better. There is a line that divides the shadows from the light, a horizon separating fear from what is truly there. At any given moment, both exist in some form- the brightest light allows objects to cast the darkest shadows, and the most complete darkness allows a light to appear brightest.

As one gets stronger, the other seems to as well, a truth that seems to apply to all areas in which opposites battle. When black text appears on white paper, it is evidently darker than it appears on another colored paper. When happiness surrounds you during a bout of sadness, the melancholy feeling is intensified. The juxtaposition of two contrasting entities allows for what seems to be an intensification of each alternate quality. We realize that without this evident contrast, we would have trouble recognizing the existence of its antipode. They build off each other. More than rivals, a bitter enmity between the two exist and an arms race causes the two to compete for greater manifestation.

Author's Note

michaela
As I mentioned in my sort-of essay, "Writer's Block", I have been stuck as of late, and I can't seem to complete any of my thoughts in my writings. This is an example of it- I can't connect it to my original plan. It's become much more of a philosophical-type essay than the beginning of a story that I've intended it to be. If anyone has any prompts or ideas regarding getting rid of writer's block, I would be eternally grateful! Thank you so much for reading, and I promise to reciprocate reviews/ratings to anyone who comments on my writing! Thank you so much! :)
