An Exercise of Imagination

An Exercise of Imagination

A Poem by michaela

I sit in the sunset, straining my imagination-
A prized possession that has waned
In the summers that bridge my childhood and the present.

The pink-tinged clouds dance about the sky, as I look for shapes.
The depiction I see reveals a piece from inside me, as I long to see more
Than simply white wisps of water on a kaleidoscopic sky.

In the deepest layer of blue, so high in the sky
A masquerading mermaid drifts, swimming in the oceans of heaven.
Above the treetops and where the birds fly
The outline of a dragonfly-shaped cloud is gilded by the sun.

A great sailing ship drifts over a rosy backdrop,
A ship I long to board, as it sails into the nighttime sea of stars.

The diaphanous whips appear as threads,
Holding together the tapestry of the sky
I reach out to touch it, my hand in the lowest level of atmosphere
And as I stare at the firmament above, I feel myself drift back to the days
When exercising my imagination was synonymous with living.
