On coffee shops No. 1

On coffee shops No. 1

A Poem by Michael Oliver

The head turns - the space burrowed

Black eyes wedged in the eye corner

Across the bridge of annoyed connection

The critical look of intrusion met

A white blouse -a cream bag

A tied headscarf - an aura of self

The assumption skims  - but locked away

Against the duck egg blue wall

The latte stirred with closed clinks

Above the froth - the jaw moves

A habit  -food - past events chewed

Her privacy is her own battle

i agree with jacob - a reserved person longing for some solitude - and the stranger's speculating glance intrudes on the woman's privacy, even if the glance didn't mean anything but ordinary body movement - i could be like this woman

this is such an interesting scene you paint...i see her sitting in the corner just wanting to drink her coffee and be left alone---but someone glances her way, and she feels that intrusion unjustified...her jaw hardens, then moves to chew past events, the ones that have made her a corner, private kind of person.

you got me there...like i was sitting across from her.
