Ancestors

Ancestors

A Poem by Milena Grubor

In the embrace of mountains, where the whispers creep,
Ancestors carved their legends, in valleys so deep.
They came to the town, where dreams dared to gleam,
But the world turned cold, shattering their dream.

Like echoes in the forest, their voices still weep,
Fallen into silence, an eternal sleep.
In the heart of the wild, where spirits roam free,
My family’s roots entwined with the ancient tree.

The scent of war hung heavy in the air,
Leaves of the fallen scattered everywhere.
We rise from the ashes, but the pain remains,
In the promised land, we dance with the strains.

Living off the land, where the rivers flow wide,
Children raised in wisdom, with love as their guide.
Yet fate is a thief, stealing fathers away,
As dusk stole the light of day.

Like lost little souls, cast astray,
Their hearts longed for hills, but they couldn’t stay.
Years turned to decades, the clock’s cruel embrace,
A tapestry woven of loss and grace.

Autumn’s chill bit deep, men fell like old trees,
And the winds whispered secrets on bended knees.
In the heart of battle, they stood side by side,
But salvation came at a heavy tide.

Then came November, I took my first breath,
While echoes of gunfire still lingered with death.
The spirits of my kin, like ghosts in the flame,
Taught me to rise, to carry their name.

In an orthodox cradle, with prayers to the skies,
I found strength in their stories, the truth never dies.
I shout to the mountains, to the forests so wide,
To the spirits of the fallen, who walk by my side.

With fire in my soul, I’ll carry the flame,
In this land of the lost, I will honor their name.
Through the darkness and sorrow, I rise from the deep,
With the strength of my ancestors, their dreams I will keep.
