When We Remember

When We Remember

A Poem by Milena Grubor

We recall them only in death,
Their worth revived by a mourner’s breath.
We summon their souls beneath hollow skies,
And treasure the sun as the August dies.

Too late we remember, too late we see,
And feed on hate where love should be.
We forget the ones who soothed our pain,
And cast them off like ghosts in rain.

Yet some we cling to, fierce, unwise,
We pull their strings while mercy dies.
Till blood adorns our trembling hands,
And guilt alone beside us stands.

No true love blooms from demon seed,
Nor grace can dwell where shadows feed.
I’ve learned my lesson, you never did,
Your eyes stay shut where truth is hid.

One day you’ll wake, your heart will ache,
For something lost you can’t remake.
That something once belonged to me,
But I’ll be gone, where none can see.

Be it death that takes me, or time’s decay,
I’ve burned all memories away.
And when you search what once was true,
There will be nothing left of you.

Dark visual which I imagine adds to the mood when you shared your fine but very emotional words. They that even now you need ed to post them, in spite of you 'saying'

' Be it death that takes me, or time’s decay,
I’ve burned all memories away.
And when you search what once was true,
There will be nothing left of you. '

Perhaps by sharing them you feel your poem is no longer a tragedy but pain thrown to the wind and rain and thus, diluted - gone ? Perhaps.

Milena, this is almost sunny compared to much of your work! Always a pleasure reading you. Love the last two lines.
