“Snowflake” Written By Milena Grubor

A Poem by Milena Grubor

The snowflake melts within my hand, yet leaves a silver flame,

A quiet fire within the cold that whispers still my name.
When storms have torn the trembling sky and shadows choke the day,
It comes, a hush of living white no darkness can betray.

So constant in its gentle tread, so steadfast at my side,

No wind can make it turn from me, no night its heart divide.
Its silent prints beside my own in frozen earth remain,
Like vows the cruelest winter’s breath could never quite profane.

Its gaze, twin lanterns in the dusk, holds neither doubt nor fear,
But burns with fierce and wordless trust whenever I am near.
Through grief, through ash, through iron hours that grind the spirit thin,
It stands, a bright, unyielding grace against the world’s loud din.

Yet towers rise and claim my breath with harsh, unholy light,
In concrete halls where flashing signs devour the gentle night.
There duty binds my wandering soul to stone and clashing sound,
While longing falls like broken snow on memory’s frozen ground.

And should the storms return again to tear the sky above,
Let thunder split the earth in two, I shall not doubt thy love.
For while my mortal pulse shall beat and breath within me wake,
My soul shall walk forever white beside thee, Snowflake.
