Chapter 1

Aerie walked along the narrow alleyway after work that night. As she walked she could hear soft footsteps behind her, footsteps that could barely be heard. Pausing for a moment she smiled as the footsteps continued.

“I figured Id see you again, Tariq.” Turning around she looked up into the eyes of her ex-lover. Tariq frowned slightly as he searched her eyes for a moment.

“You know for a fact I have always been there. No matter how much of a pain you’ve been.” Biting her bottom lip she shoved her hands into the pockets of her leather jacket and turned to continue on her way home.

“Tariq, we both agreed that it was best that you stay away from me.” A snort came from behind her.

“No…I agreed to stay away because of your safety. I would never have wanted to cause you any pain nor put you into any danger. Which is what you would have been in if I had stayed around.” Aerie clenched her fists in her pockets, as she spun around, rage shown in her eyes.

“You know for a fact either way I was going to end up hurt! No matter if I were safe or not! God you only think about that stupid Board! Why are they so important!” It was more of a retort then a question. Taking in a deep breath Aerie shook off her rage and continued down the dark alley, knowing he was still following close behind her. “Tariq, just go home.” He sighed softly as she tried, with all her might, to push her feelings for him away.

“You know I can’t do that. Since the moment I bit you, we were bound together for all eternity.” A sob sounded in the back of Aerie’s throat as pain overwhelmed her. “I’m sorry my love…” He hurried close to her side and wrapped his arms around her. “Please forgive me. I never meant for my words to injure you.” Gently he held her head against his chest. She listened for the sound of his heartbeat but was greeted with nothing. Slowly her emotions took control once again. Taking in a shuddering breath she gently pulled away just a few inches.

“Maybe it’s best that you don’t try and contact me anymore.” For the first time since they’ve met, Aerie was finally able to see pain in his eyes.

“No…I will not…I refuse!” He said his voice hoarse from the pain she had caused. Aerie broke free from his arms and zipped up her leather jacket. Turning on her heel she took off at a quick jog, racing down the street to her apartment. There were no footsteps that could be heard as she raced along. Tariq was either in flight, or he had turned away to try again another day.

Chapter 2

Aerie woke up the morning after mine and Tariq’s meeting. Words from the night before flooded into her mind.

“Erg…” Rolling over in bed she looked into the face of her wolf, Exavier. Smiling softly she shook her head and gently rose.

“I guess I have to go to work today…” The date was July 2nd. And the bar was preparing for the 4th. Groaning Aerie rose from her bed, no clothing covering her toned body. Making her way to the shower she accidentally bumped into her bedside table.

“Damn!” Bending over she rubbed her big toe and slowly hobbled her way into the bathroom. Starting the shower she walked over to the sink and brushed her hair so that it’d be easier to wash. Aerie expected it to be another long day at Mack’s. The bar where she worked was a great place to go. People drank and had a great time, but sometimes she would get fondled more then what was appreciated. Mack, her best friend, and of course the owner, kept a close eye on all of his waitresses, just in case someone grabbed a hold of them.

Stepping into the shower she reached down and grabbed for the shampoo. Pouring a quarter sized amount into her hand she quickly lathered it into her hair. Before washing it out she let it soak in her hair while she washed and shaved her body. Once her body was rinsed off she stepped back under the water, allowing the shampoo to drain out of her hair.
