Funny thing that some time back I wrote a poem called 'Give it Back' where I was asking for that 'piece' back so I could go on living my life. I think your interpretation is much better than mine and deserves my respect for explaining that I shouldn't be trying to grasp something back that I have offered someone anyway - even if the concept of 'us' has faded away into nothing.
