Long After Midnight

Long After Midnight

A Poem by Michael Stevens
"

Night Attack!

"

Long After Midnight

It’s long after midnight, and you’re wide awake,

listening to night noises; seeing invisible movement in shadows;

pondering mysteries that you couldn’t solve in the light of day

Not only can’t you solve them now, but they’re changed into something worse

Shock runs through you as the meaning of your thoughts

becomes clear; sudden panic hits in waves

No answers come to your exhausted mind

Now you’re sure that if you don’t get to sleep soon,

your tomorrow will be long and depressing

Why is it that we do this to ourselves?
