"Touchdown!"

"Touchdown!"

A Poem by Michael Stevens
"

Made it through my very first novel!

"

“Touchdown!”

It was time for lunch, but the kid wouldn’t leave.

for he was this close to finishing his very first novel,

“Touchdown for Tommy!”  The teacher was getting impatient,

for it was her lunchtime too, but she didn’t want to discourage

him, for, after all, he loved reading, and

that was a very good thing.  “Mike,” she gently said to him,

“it’s time for lunch, everyone else is gone; are you

almost done?”  “Almost,” he answered, and went on reading

As she stood there, she had to be getting a little agitated,

at least that’s what I’m thinking, all these years later

But I’d been so proud to almost make it through my

very first novel!  At last I was done; “I’m done!” I said,

and she turned the lights off, and I walked

out the door ahead of her, so proud; ‘Touchdown!'

I'm glad if I could get the raw, scribbled shell of a manuscript finished. Touchdown, indeed. Though, both being baseball fans, there should be another word. Nice piece of writing, Mike. For some reason, I think this should have been a Charles tale, back when he was a aspiring, not-too-serious writer.
