Alice MagareyA Poem by Michael StevensAnother of the fictitious neighbors I see 'From My Window'Oh joy, another day of being taken for granted,
another day of being invisible; of
nothing but housework
You know, this is not how I thought
marriage
was supposed to be; it was supposed
to be a
wonderful adventure; not never ending
drudgery
Whatever became of the daydreaming
girl I used to be?
The one with stars in her eyes and
dreams in her heart?
Somewhere along the line she left,
leaving
only me, a disillusioned soul,
beaten down by life
Isn’t marriage supposed to be a
give and take?
Well, someone forgot to tell my
husband,
for all he does is take and never
gives
Speaking of my husband, he’ll be
home from work soon
I’d better finish sweeping the
walk, then get
into the kitchen and get busy,
because dinner
must be ready and waiting for his
highness
as soon as he steps through the
door
I wonder what he’d do if I said no,
tonight, I think I’d like to go out;
probably look at me
like I was crazy; ‘Isn’t that your job? Why spend a
week’s worth of dinner money on one
single meal?
Quite a waste of money, don’t you
think? After all,
that’s why I work so hard, ever
single day,
to put food on the table, and we
don’t need to waste
money going out.” There’s only 2 things wrong with
that dear-heart: you don’t put any food on the table,
I do; and I’m totally bored, and would like a
little something done for me, but
you can’t or won’t
understand that; I really don’t
think you care
you used to be different; you’d do
things just for me,
but I guess the bloom is off the
rose
