The Light at the End of the Tunnel

The Light at the End of the Tunnel

A Poem by Michael Stevens
"

Seeking a way out

"

Squinting though the darkness, trying to find the way out

Left stranded underground, buried by your thoughts

Straining eyes seek out a familiar landmark

Then, relief washes over you; you finally see a light,

Far away, but still, it's there; you stumble towards it,

Clinging to its vision like a drowning man's preserver

You finally have a destination, that light's

The way out; you're no longer alone in the dark

Step after painful step, until the light's definitely

A little closer; but then you hear a sound,

Like something coming the other way

What is it, you ask yourself as you come to a stop

Then, the light's definitely getting closer;

Still the roaring grows until it's a shriek,

And you start looking for somewhere, anywhere

To escape from the terrible light that seems

To be rapidly bearing down on you,

But there's nowhere to go, the walls

Almost touching the tracks; when suddenly

You're all-too-certain what's coming straight

At you; it's your memories, screaming down the track,

And what at first you thought was a way out

Now becomes a nightmare train, running

Out of control, set to run you down,

And there's not a damn thing you can do

That's very pessimistic--noteven to be able to trust a light.

Try making work word, huh?

Nonsense. You aren't moronic, and you shouldn't be pessimistic.

Oh, I just take the easy road, and make fun of myself; I know I'm a genius; lol!
