Eyes in the DarkA Poem by Michael StevensThe unknown![]() Just out of view, did that shadow
just move? Fear of the fear taints all that
you do. It's the unknown that fills you
with dread. The reality's gone, reason has
fled.
The monsters in your mind rise to
new heights. The shadows build until they block
out the light. Your mind in overdrive, the
imagined terrors rise higher, till your tortured
brain alters
reality and gives way to your
imagined nightmares, as you play a game of possibles
solitaire. You're all alone, alone in the dark. This paranoia cannot be seen, it
leaves no mark,
but it'll destroy you, small bit by
small bit, eating away your piece of mind,
until it gets to the end, and leaves you shaking. It's selfish--it never leaves, it's
only taking
You tell yourself all of this, yet
it does no good. You know exactly what's
happening--you know you should just will yourself to stop, will
yourself to a better mental place, but you're helpless, the mirror reflects
a growing tortured face.
