On the Edge, of What?

On the Edge, of What?

A Poem by Michael Stevens
"

Breakthrough, or breaking my fall?

"

Look at me, I'm right on the edge, of what,

I couldn't tell you--it might be a breakthrough,

or , more likely, a complete mental breakdown.

***

I could be writing the great American novel,

or, more likely, a manifesto of madness.

I could be about to unlock the keys to happiness,

or, and again, much more likely, trying in vain

to grasp the pen sitting just out of reach on the

table, while wearing a straight jacket.

***

I could be working to further world peace, or, say it with me,

much more likely, deciding I'm a candidate for public office!

If you'rer wearing a straight jacket, you surely are a candidate for public office.
