Letter to a One-Time FriendA Poem by Michael StevensA victim of the times![]() All these years, I thought I knew
who you were. Yes, we had our differences, to be
sure,
but overall, I thought we got along
okay. But reading your comments, and the
way
you defend the indefensible, makes
me realize whatever we had in common is long
gone--you get a rise
out of me for the crazy things you
now believe. I don't understand what happened to
you, cannot conceive
of your far right wing philosophy--I
used to think somewhere inside you, was compassion, I used
to think you'd care
about the innocent victims of gun
violence, for example, but I was wrong, any sense of a compassionate, caring
person is gone,
replaced by a hard-line, rigid ideology, one whose logic, try as I might, I
just can't see.
It's a sad fact of these polarizing
times, but it's the new normal, I guess, that we can't find common
ground, and our friendship will fall. © 2015 Michael Stevens |
