The Real Key to Happiness!

The Real Key to Happiness!

A Poem by Michael Stevens
"

The truth!

"

I've heard it said that the happiness key

is love--no, the key is to not believe everything you read,

see, or hear, because three quarters of it is B.S.

It's a trick of the media to get you feeling stress,

because when you feel uptight, you'll stay tuned in,

so the powers that be give everything a doomsday spin.

Soon after viewing, you'll be looking around for a tall ladder

and a short rope--you'll be getting madder or sadder.

Yes, we are the marionettes, and they are pulling the strings,

they are the puppet masters--we are the easily-duped, and they are the kings!

Nice lighthearted treatment of a deep & serious drawback to our rarely-questioned capitalistic society. Since I worked in Marketing, I was TAUGHT to create a need. That's exactly what you're describing here. How can you sell something if you don't first create a need? But even more appalling than our capitalistic bent is our consumption of political messages, again dripping with fear-mongering, lest we get comfortable in our lives. It's hard not to launch a rant myself when you present your message so convincingly. As for the writing itself, the rhythm & pacing feels a little raggedy, but all in all, you've paid attention to all the necessities of poetic structure. Good job of provoking thought.

Thank you--as for the form, I paid less attention to that, and more attention to the subject matter!
