What the Hell is Going On?

What the Hell is Going On?

A Poem by Michael Stevens
"

Really--I don't understand

"

I look around, but I don't see...the familiar, the tried-and-true,

the steady grip of what used to pass for given, in the red, white, and blue.

When did we become so afraid, so angry, so unfeeling?

I want to scream, "what the hell is going on?", but my mind is reeling.

Strangers on T.V. shouting 'send them back!'--turned away from compassion.

'Build a wall!' is yelled--view outsiders and insiders with angry suspicion.

Excuse me, but this is nothing like what I thought we stood for,

a fair chance, a helping hand, and an open, not a closed door.
