Backwards?

Backwards?

A Poem by Michael Stevens
"

Are we evolving, or...?

"

Sometimes it's a conundrum, getting smarter, or stupid?
Has our oxygen supply somehow been diluted?

Should be easy to answer, but I search for answers in vain.
To support a man with big hands and a tiny brain?

I just don't get it. How can supposedly-intelligent souls
act like so many unintelligent, mob-mentality trolls?

It seems to me it's a real-life game of follow-the-leader,
like we're watching from a distance, and are merely a sightseer.

Wake up, people--alarm bells ought to be ringing, loud and clear,
for oblivion is waiting--once so distant, but now so near.

I've been trying to reconcile new levels of college diplomas,
with what I'm seeing--is half the country in some non-thinking coma,

because, I've been there, done that, but eventually, put my thinking
cap on again. What's their excuse? What have they been drinking?

Supposedly, as a species, we're moving ahead and evolving,
but, somewhere along the way, we've lost our problem-solving

ability--what next, our ability to use tools and walk upright?
Are we going to walk in the sunlight, or live in perpetual night?
