Thank you, and I knew this would get a strong reaction, but I wanted to show how crazy our gun-loving-culture is!

It's hard, as a Canadian, quite frankly, not to judge. It really is nothing like that here. I don't even understand the concept of using the constitution to justify such irrational behaviour. How "the right to bear arms" is taken to the extreme of keeping a gun in your pocket or at your bedside is beyond me.

Only us--we seem to have the wild west mindset, and I don't get it either. Back in the day, civilization was iffy, and hadn't caught up to common sense, and maybe we needed them to a certain degree--but I hear the argument made by gunners that they need guns for 'home protection'. They wheel that excuse out every time ANY common sense changes are proposed. The proposed ban on assault rifles is something that seems all-too-logical, yet all I hear is, 'but I have a right to protect my home.' Okay, I'll agree if you can tell me what possible reason you'll need a rifle that shoots a bunch of rounds a a minute, as opposed to a single-shot one. They stop conversing at that point, because they have no answer--it's crazy!

The crazy thing I don't get is, sensible gun laws are not bans. Our handgun legislation here requires training, registration,a licence, a locked case, and transport only to and from a shooting range. We did have backlash over the long gun registry because a lot of hunters found it onerous. But, most responsible gun owners don't see a problem with registering, licencing, and locking up. A police officer should be able to know if he is walking into a domestic dispute, for example, there are 5 registered weapons in the house. We are not allowed to own the same type of weapons as police have. Only makes sense. I dunno. Never owned a gun. Don't want one.

I agree, it's crazy--it's almost like the gun has cast a spell over the gun owner. They think that common sense gun laws are only the first step towards a complete ban. Then, when the president declares himself Emperor for life, we'll be helpless. It's mass paranoia.

The best suggestion I heard was using GPS technology on guns. If you can shut down a bloody golf cart when it goes off the golf course, why not use a similar technology on all legal guns? Sure, there is always going to be the illegal stuff, but at least, a pissed off parent can't take the legal gun they have and go to the day care and shoot up the day care. People do irrational things. It is only rational to put limits on what we can do without a thought for the consequences.

I completely agree--but the other side will say, "just another example of Big Brother watching!" I say someone's got to watch out for innocents, cause you're certainly not!"
