Where Monsters Reside

Where Monsters Reside

A Poem by Michael Stevens
"

Be careful what you wish for

"

This is a collaboration between Hullabaloo22 and myself:

I woke up this morning with the news beside my head

and there was an announcement that caused a kind of dread,

it seems we’re further on the way to the end of you and me

as we’re being hurtled on a course to World War 3.

The same old super-powers are preparing now to spar,

maybe with each other but more likely with a far

less expected target where this combined might

will be unleashed on others and lethally ignite.

The threat is there, it’s very clear, we're staring down a gun

and the future that is facing us is looking far from fun.

This threat is far more nuclear, and don’t forget the drones

that can be armed, remote-controlled to be destroyed alone.

I’m not gonna worry, I won’t be losing sleep --

it’s not the first time I’ve felt this way and hope I’m gonna keep

being wrong about it, but all governments don’t you see

that you might be representing someone but it sure as hell ain’t me.

Mad dogs, they might be slavering, the wolves are on the hunt --

just ask yourselves a question -- ‘Is this the world I want?’

Prepare to own it, all you Trump supporters who are now gloating,

basking in a hollow victory, without understanding, or knowing

the consequences of what you've, by your vote, set in motion.

Decisions made on not careful deliberation, but by knee-jerk emotion.

We'll just see if in time, and not a lot of it, you're still celebrating

what with the consequences that we have to live with, and are surely awaiting.

I hope I'm wrong, but right now, I can't see how, and I sure hope so,

because there's no victory my being right, just tell a tale of woe.

Right now, you're reveling in your perceived victory,

but, if it turns out you were wrong, and darkness is all we see,

what will you do then, when the reality hit you full force?

When everything you hoped for, was a change in course?

We've got a change in course, all right, but a change to what?

By choosing people who we hope aren't off their nut?

I'm just warning you, be careful what you wish for,

for the monster may be inside, not outside the door.
