A reminder before the nightmare began

Democracy means inclusion, democracy means tolerance

Democracy means diversity, hope, and

democracy means a chance

Democracy means freedom of the 

press, and freedom of religion

Democracy means a shining city on a 

hill and it means welcome

Democracy doesn't mean mean-spirited and 

it doesn't mean hate

Democracy doesn't mean intolerance, 

democracy doesn't mean closed

Democracy should be something to aspire to, 

democracy means we the people

all the people, standing tall: democracy 

means a helping hand, not a closed fist

Democracy means embracing the world, not 

building walls to keep them out

Democracy means inquiring minds and wide-

open eyes, not close-minded paranoia

Democracy used to mean pride, not leaders who 

bring embarrassment and shame
