Googly-Eyed Pumpkin

Googly-Eyed Pumpkin

A Poem by Monica Chen
"

Why carve out eyes when you can stick them on instead?

"

It’s cold; it’s autumn; it’s Halloween.

I’m sitting on a bench and hollering.

Ambition, I mutter as I stab my knife

Into the object of my bitter strife.

I don’t think I’ll be sleeping tonight.

A friend, eavesdropping, wanders by - the commoner!

It’s a pumpkin he laughs, waving his jack o’lantern named Oliver.

I chew on my gold necklace, the dolphin pendant

Grinds against my molars in utter abandonment

As I struggle to carve an orange ornament.

Ten minutes! The announcer calls a swarm

To mushroom around the display platform

But I still haven’t managed to carve a nose,

A mouth, or even the eyes - oh, how I dearly need those!

I run off the field, pumpkin in hand, to the nearest store - oh, please don’t close!

I grab a pack of googly eyes, race to the register,

And pay for my purchase while dabbing glue (such an amateur!)

Onto my pumpkin and transforming him quite magically into a jack-o lantern.

What does he lack? I ask the cashier with a dramatic wave and turn.

Where do you plan to put that candle? The cashier laughed. Why, he’ll simply burn.

I tend to call my friends weird things; my current favorite nickname for them all is "child".

This was an entry for the "10 Words I Give" challenge and the ten words are highlighted in orange...it was pretty fun to explore a more humorous side of me in this nonsensical poem. Remember autumn?

Fun and whimsical. Autumn; my favorite season of the year. Crisp and so full of color.
Thank you for your entry into the 10 Words I Give contest! Enjoyed the read. And why not
glue eyes onto a pumpkin? Good question. The pumpkins and gourds last longer uncut.
