Loving you isn't worth the cost

Sometimes we love someone so much we let them hurt us. We find we have to care about ourselves

I looked up to you

I cared what you thought

I gave things up

I never fought

 

I looked to you for advice

I took your words to heart

I loved you more than anything

I cared from the start

 

I let you have my soul

I gave you anything I could

I felt your pain

I gave in and you knew I would

 

I cried at night remembering it all

I hid it from everyone

I lied to save you

I tried and I'm done

 

I told to save myself

I gave to help me

I needed and wanted you

I can't but now I'm free

This needs some work. I told to save myself? You told who? You gave what to who? You can't what? Interesting concept, a powerful message but the last stanza throws it off for me.

I agree with Zeitgeist_Manifesto. Though you're great at the style you present, I get the feeling that you're not expanding your potential. Test the waters with other forms of poetry (or even other forms of writing), see where it takes you.

This poem is so simple in thought. Telling a tale that is so very relatable, it deals with a serious situation, and conveys strength at the end. Good message.
