Father of Our CountryA Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader
Father of Our Nation Made the river crossing Proudly in the dead of night General of our Independence His light burned big and bright He stood tall in the boat for his men to see Prayed for guidance and precision He gained the ground Because of his decision Carrying Old Glory Stars and Stripes Into British front lines, while bombs explode Determined to take the higher ground Standing tall and proud as his men rowed Father of our country, this man of war Faced British foe that cold dark night Winning our independence Building a new nation of light Stand Proud Stand Proud Stand Proud Stand Proud The old wooden boat creaked with age, as General George Washington engaged Crossed the Delaware on Christmas Day in 1851, while the British foe met decay Slept in their tents, believing the war was won and they were the victors in the sun Washington received honor and fame to become the first President a household name The first of a long line of men to take the oath, becoming President for the nation’s growth Remember the man not the wig he wore; he braved the cold to assure independence, not war For young and old, he showed courage and great leadership, with valor on his nautical trip President George Washington, Father of a nation … a man deserving of our admiration © 2008 Nancy Lee ShraderReviews
