SilhouettesA Story by Nancy Lee ShraderFlash Fiction
Silhouettes fell across the shadows in the darkened alley. Leora was now wishing she had not taken the shortcut to her apartment on Kanawha Street. Noises had begun joining the sinister shadows, which sent shivers up and down her spine. Her breath caught in her throat as the sound of footsteps came closer in the darkness. She attempted a scream, but not a single sound escaped her pink tinted lips. She quickened her steps through the alley until she was running for her very life. Suddenly a voice rang out in the darkness. "Leora wait up! It’s me!" She didn’t recognize the male voice calling out to her, but she slowed her dash to safety. She turned taking a backward glance into the darkness. It was then she saw the gleam of the blade as it slashed at her, ripping a large hole in her coat. She only had a second to decide what to do. She raised the point of her umbrella and thrust it forward into the stomach of her attacker. She heard him cry out in pain. She pulled back on the umbrella and realized that the long pointed end had stabbed the man. She fled as fast as she could to the end of the alley and the brightly lit street that was full of people. She was safe. Silhouettes © 2008 Nancy Lee ShraderReviews
