The Glass Slipper

The Glass Slipper

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

The Glass Slipper

Cinderella! Cinderella! Cinderella!

Her name sounded like a curse

Each time her stepsisters bellowed

Each voice sounding worse

In the early morning dawn

Her work began each day

Never a moment’s peace

Until the house slept the night away

Nightly she cowered close to the flame

In cinders she sat lost and alone

Trying to stay warm

Girl tired and worked to the bone

An invitation arrived one spring day

The King and Queen was giving a Ball

But she wasn’t allowed to go

Only her stepsisters could have it all

Small creatures of the house

Worked paws to the bone

Creating a dress

Of her very own

Her stepsisters’ trash

The mice sewed with care

But the stepsisters tore at her dress

When they saw her standing there

Cinderella cried in the darkness

But her tears weren’t in vain

Her fairy godmother

Sprinkled fairy dust down like rain

A beautiful gown around her whirled

Tiny glass slippers adorned her feet

A pumpkin for a coach and mice became horses

Cinderella looked like a princess so sweet

The coach drove away to the Ball

Fairy godmother called out the hour

You must leave before the stroke of midnight

All my magic by will then be sour

Your coach will be a pumpkin

And the horses will be mice

Your dress will be in tatters

So let me be precise

Heed my warning

Don’t dance too long

Be home before midnight

Or sing a sad song

Cinderella dance way up into the night

On the arm of the Prince, her heart all aglow

Her stepsisters were green with envy

Who was this raving beauty; they had to know

Cinderella ran away from the Ball

As the midnight hour began to bong

First went the horses then the coach

She lost one shoe as she ran along

Her dress was in tatters

But on one of her small feet

The tiny glass slipper

As a memory sweet

Next morning she sang a happy song

One night of wonderful to reminisce

A memory she would cherish

Of the Prince and his last kiss

There was a knock at the door

Soldiers stood at attention waiting command

Behind stood the Prince in royal attire

He held her slipper in the palm of his hand

I will marry the girl this shoe fits

Said the Prince in his baritone voice

Cinderella smiled

And her heart rejoiced

Stepsisters pushed her out of the way

Each tried to put their big feet inside

The Prince then asked, looking around

Is there anyone who hasn’t tried?

Cinderella stepped forward to take her tern

The Prince did trip and it fell to the floor

Shattering into a million pieces

Prince Charming sadly walked out the door

Cinderella reached in her pocket

Slipper’s mate she held in her hand

He slipped it on her foot

And a ring on her hand

Cinderella sits not in cinders

She has a royal seat

Crown Princess of the realm

Now her stepsisters kneel at her feet
