Haiku Call of the WildA Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader
Haiku Call of the Wild Coyotes’ night cry We hear the call of the wild They howl at the moon Buffalo roam here In the wide open spaces Indians were free Cowboys ride the range Longhorns graze on the prairie Wild mustangs run free Families leave home Wagon trains traveling west To make a new start Wild animals here Hunting parties scout their prey All must kill to eat Men of the gold rush Pan for gold in moving streams And some strike it rich Whisky soothes the beast Saloon girls paint their faces Cards played at tables Farmers’ log cabins Families live in one room Children sleep in loft Hear the crickets’ song As lightning bugs light the night Natures lullaby Endangered species Buffalos slaughtered for Sport From slow moving trains Lifestyle of the past Cowboys are a dying breed Indians roamed No more open range Skyscrapers high in the sky Gangs now roam the streets Run wild in the streets Urban Coyotes lurk here Roam concrete jungles Once roamed wild and free Some are domesticated Wolves are now house dogs Violence in the streets Extinct family values Miss the olden days © 2009 Nancy Lee ShraderReviews
