LIGHTHOUSE NEWSA Poem by Nancy Lee ShraderBy Salvatore Battaci and Nancy Lee Shrader
LIGHTHOUSE NEWS By Salvatore Battaci Stanzas 1-3 Nancy Lee Shrader Stanzas 2-4 After a dinner of scrod and potatoes The old geezer in the lighthouse puffed away On his pipe, tapped out the ashes, then dozed off He never made it to the comfort of bed So tired, he snored in his rocking chair His dreams run-of-the-mill, forgettable Old geezer awakes with the morning sun Lighthouse beacon fades as night turns into day Another new day, and work begins again Arthritic knees creak as he climbs the stairway Polish the beacon and fill the gas well Ships in the night are depending on him He remembers his youth, those long-gone-days When love was in the air and life held promise But now his only companion is this Lighthouse cabin high in the evening sky Gone his sweet Livia to where we all In time must take our leave and settle bones Livia comes to him in dreams now and then Young and beautiful as the day they first met He fights the dawn, not wanting the dream to end Still, the scent of her lingers in the salty air On these mornings, old geezer awakes refreshed With a spring in his step, a song in his heart © 2009 Nancy Lee ShraderReviews
