GOD'S PRETTIEST ROSE

GOD'S PRETTIEST ROSE

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

GOD'S PRETTIEST ROSE

In loving memory of my son Samuel David

Children are like flowers and everyone knows

The Lord only picks the prettiest rose

I was blessed me with a daughter and son

Two years apart, but God still wasn’t done

God showed me heaven in deep brown eyes

An angel from heaven fell out of the skies

You see there was another who is now gone

The baby boy who didn’t live very long

There wasn’t much time, but I do hold dear

The joy he gave in those three short years

He may be gone, but deep in my heart

His memory takes up such a large part

I’ll never forget his bright eyes and sweet smile

I had him to love for a very short while

He never had the chance to be all he could be

The little time we had is very precious to me

And if there was a way, I would turn back time

To a happier day when David was mine

That isn’t possible so I will patiently wait

For Jesus to reach out his hand and open the gate

And beckon me home to the heavenly realm

To where David stands beside Him at the helm

He's one of heaven's smallest angels you see

And I know he's up there just waiting for me

He's skipping and jumping on clouds in the sky

Just being a little boy under God's watchful eye

He's laughing and playing with the heavenly host

His bedtime stories being told by the Holy Ghost

Yes, he's one of God angels, my sweetness and light

I'm sure he turns on the stars in the night

With the twinkle in his beautiful brown eyes

He lights up the beautiful night skies

Playing peek-a-boo with the man in the moon

While singing a delightful bedtime tune

Waking the morning sun with his happy smile

I’m sure he makes all the angels’ days worthwhile

He calls all the flowers from their winter’s bed

Saying wake up you guys, don’t be such a sleepy head

Oh yes, my loss is heaven’s gain

My little angel turns on the cooling spring rain

With a nod from his head flowers burst into view

Awaiting the sun and the sweet morning dew

His days are now full with joyful play

On golden streets, wouldn’t you say?

With this thought, I lay down to sleep

And pray to the Lord my baby to keep

Lucky am I if you think of

Heaven gave me a little angel to love

Not very many are as lucky you see

For I had a piece of heaven living with me

If heaven’s opinion of someone’s worth

Is measured by how much they are loved here on earth

Then David sits next to God’s throne on high

Knowing I loved him this much, as big as the sky

Children are like flowers and everyone knows

The Lord only picks the prettiest rose
