Haiku Day of Fear Magnificent day Turned into a day of fear Guns exploding here Eager childhood play Interrupted by gunfire All duck for cover Sirens fill the air Gunfire explodes around us Its deafening sounds My heart of fear wakes Oh my God, where is my child? I scream in terror Police dispatches From precincts all over town Gang wars erupted Various playthings Monkey bars, merry-go-round She played on all these More places I look Sandbox and the sliding-board But she isn’t there I see her at last She’s on the swings over there I see her falling Through all the red blood I watch her life-force failing Oh God let her live Paramedics come Access the wounded This one’s still alive My prayer is answered Through all the blood and the gore My child is alive The big city life And all the places to go Has lost its luster Need the simple life Where sirens don’t fill the air No guns exploding Magnificent move Far from the gang violence Down the country roads Quiet little town West Virginia our new home Swings are a safe place Police dispatches To help find her lost kitten No more blood and gore She wakes each morning A bright smile upon her face There’s nothing to fear Various flowers Katie picks in the back yard Hides behind her back She’s eager to play And there’s no fear in her eyes No fear in my heart Only wounded here Are skinned knees bandaged by Mom And tears kissed away © 2009 Nancy Lee Shrader |
