Drugs Destroy Lives

Drugs Destroy Lives

A Poem by Nancy Lee Shrader

Haiku Drugs Destroy Lives

Are drugs good or bad?

I’ll tell you what I have seen

On the children’s ward

Boy age of five

Had not body, just a trunk

Thirty surgeries

Finally he can walk

But still his face is grotesque

Still more surgeries

Baby born in pain

His mother gave birth on drugs

Screams until he’s hoarse

Father he did drugs

Mother went the healthy way

Still the baby died

Another mother

Spent her youth in drug stupor

Baby paid the price

Baby born healthy

On day six she passed away

Drugs were the culprit

Are drugs good or bad?

Ask the babies and the boy

They have the answers

This hits right to the heart of the drug problem in this country. Good piece.
