The Myths and Monsters Within Us AllA Poem by NelliKongThey used to say when we were kids that monsters lived underneath our beds… but in fact the truth is scarier instead… or how we determine it to be in our heads. Some might call me a reincarnated Medusa, polarzing stances that will leave you stoned…not because of my outward configuration, but because how m thoughts and opinion lean unorthodox and even unconventionally attractive. I may not have snakes as hair, but I rather that than to not be able to see the snakes hiding in the grass… slithering away to tell misinterpreted pieces of my past… or put my name in the dirt covered in slime so my future cant be anything I will surpass… all for those snakes to shed their skin for the sake of portraying me as the “monster”. On the Greek food chain I may not be a goddess but instead a minotaur… because I like to speak my truth head on… ram into controversy with bull horns… even if that means I have to carry the weight of the world on my back and hold it with all my strength for all eternity like Atlas. We are the monsters… our truths considered myths… the lore of our lives written as the next Odyssey… the monsters and myths we’ve read about are not how they may seem. © 2026 NelliKong |
