Bill Clinton is noted for his defense as saying: That depends on the definition of what "is" is.
Epistemology and predication and is:
The English language
The English language is noted different from other languages as emphasising the use of nouns profusely.
This entails the need for articles to associate with a noun. Perhaps invoking the Law of Identity.  "is" is one of the articles used to associate parts of an expression with a noun.
Under an examination via epistemology and predication the functional use of "is" exposes its vulnerability to the extent, as with other languages, as to be not functional in certain respects. It is likely that "is" could be excised if not for the dependency built in the English language.
In very old treatments of language analysis, not European in this case but is reflected
in the Indo-European branch and not using the categories directly of epistemology and predication per se, it was noted that there is the fallacy of reification. When that is invoked it goes toward the excision of nouns in the language. With nouns proscribed, the Law of Identity cannot be. With no presence of nouns, there is no article that verbs can be associated. Ergo, the one word, is, that is so relied upon for expressing "being" is obviated. This does effect the use of nominal and class positings.
