Blast! What would be the effects if a Gamma Ray Burst found Earth?

A team of scientists lead by Matan Sade have undertaken a task to depict what would be the impact of a  high power Gamma Ray Burst from the galaxy and any relation to extinction of species. Paper is released March 18, 2026 to Arxiv, arxiv.org: 2603.18250.

First, keep in mind this would be a burst, not sustained exposure. They play several scenarios and stages.

Their scope is emphasizing what a burst would do to biology and whether life could
rebound.

They portray, since a Gamma Burst is not a lasting blast, the area of Earth affected would not be total. It could likely just affect the side of the Earth which is directly facing could be impacted, like a continent or hemisphere. It could likely just affect the topical and aerial levels and less so with deep water.

The team also takes into account from the strike of the GRB that there would also be considered the after effects like change in atmosphere could have a lingering detrimental effects on lifeforms long after the impact. Nitric Oxide among others would change the chemistry of the air unfavorably for some time.

The team does not focus on whether a specific species would be at risk of extinction.
Rather they consider what the impact and its aftermath would endanger teams of life or not. They calculate what play there would be on the environment and chemical interactions that may allow life to reboot.

They calculate what survival chances are and how long would it take in millions of years to reconstitute propagation. They note it would likely not be of the same forms as before the impact.  They briefly note the history of the "five extinctions" for comparisons.
